The Perpetual Vagabond

Exploring the world near and far, mostly on foot.

All Packed and Ready to Go!

I don’t leave for Spain and the Camino de Santiago for another 2 weeks…but my bag is packed and I am ready to go!

The good thing about packing so early is that it gives me time to make sure I am not forgetting anything important and not bringing more than I need. The bad thing is that I keep looking at my bag and desperately wanting to leave tomorrow.

But, to be honest I’m also a little nervous. I may be a vagabond, but I tend to stick close to people I know. I’ve never spent 6 weeks traveling entirely solo. I’ve never hiked 600 miles. I’ve never even been to Spain. I’ve done many challenging things in my life, but this is new and different and is making me feel a little uncertain as to what will happen.

But, I guess that is the journey. I’m looking for something new in my life and in my travels and I can’t stick to what I already know to find it. So for the next 2 weeks I will wait with anticipation while my bag sits there nicely packed and reminding me of the adventure ahead!

Mmm excited for you. I love reading blogs like yours. I’m a homebody with wander lust, so I have to stay motivated to work towards a life of travel and adventure.

I’m excited for you! I remember all those feelings before my Camino. I remember being so anxious I could barely eat breakfast on my first morning of walking. One of the beauties of the Camino though, is that all that fades away once you start walking. Your mind will stop looking forward and start focusing on each step, each hill, each gorgeous flower and vineyard.

Your pack looks like a good size. How’d you go getting everything in that you wanted? I’m sure you’ve done a great job, but if I can give any prospect-pilgrim any advice, it is less is more. Think my pack was 5-6kg, and more than enough!

Enjoy the countdown. I look forward to more Camino posts! ~ Nic

Thanks! I think the only thing I have in there that I’m not sure about is a lightweight sleeping bag and sleeping pad…I could leave them, but I like the idea of having flexibility in where I stay…otherwise I think I’m ready to go!

I’m very impressed. firstly that you are taking this brave step and secondly that your bags are packed. I’m a last minute packer. I think may have a suitcase phobia.

That’s great! I would say take the sleeping bag for sure… although you’re going in summer, the nights can get surprisingly cool in villages that are in a bit of a dip or peak. I used mine every night and stayed in albergues most nights. I didn’t take a sleeping pad or know of anyone who did, but it really depends on what makes you feel comfortable. 🙂

I’m not going until next year, but can I pack now? 🙂 Have a great time, and I’ll follow your adventures, knowing my own are just a few months away.

How exciting! I hope to walk the Camino some day so I’m looking forward to following your trip – especially since you are such a great photographer. 🙂 Hopefully you can use this time to read-up on the trail in preparation for the experience and not get too stir crazy.

Amazing! I just came across the movie “The Way” which is about a man’s journey on the Camino de Santiago. While the movie wasn’t my favorite, I couldn’t stop watching and have now added the pilgrimage to my list of life goals!! Wish you all the best on your journey!

I saw The Way recently, which was partially part of my inspiration! But, I agree the movie itself was so-so. I hope you get to go someday!

That’s the ONE picture I completely forgot to take! Before and after hiking… Oh well… it might just mean I need to go back!
If I remember correctly, you walked for 2 weeks before having to cut short your trip. Did you ever have time to go back and finish it?

That’s right, I walked for two weeks before having to return home. I haven’t been able to go back yet, but I still plan on it!
